Traditional artistry, ethical luxury

Jaipur Tents

Enjoy dreamy days and romantic nights under the stars with these luxury Indian garden tents inspired by the ancient canopies used by the Mughal Emperors of India.

The Indian Garden Company’s Jaipur Indian Tents are guaranteed to create an ambience fit for a Maharaja.

Exquisite craftsmanship makes our Jaipur tents unique. These romantic tents are designed and constructed by skilled craftsmen in India using traditional Rajasthani techniques and designs that date back hundreds of years.

The Indian Garden Company has been producing and supplying these garden tents for the last 7 years and has delivered to satisfied customers in UK, Europe, Middle East, Australia, Russia, and America.

Bernadette O'Farrell, founder of the Indian Garden Company, spent many years developing and adapting traditional Indian tents to make the tents suitable for Western climates. As Bernadette says, “I fell in love with the nomadic tents of Northern India and was determined to bring them back to the UK yet the ones we imported just did not stand up to British weather. So, over the course of three years, we worked closely with skilled artisans, tent specialists, fabric experts to develop an Indian inspired garden tent that is functional as well as being stylish. There's lots that goes into making these fairy-tale spaces – to cope with Britain's damp weather we've developed a canvas fabric that looks and feels like cotton but is waterproof, anti-fungal, rot-proof and fire-retardant. Instead of the traditional bamboo frames, we use stainless steel structures. The inside fabric of the tent is beautifully hand-printed using traditional wooden printing blocks. We harness the best of Indian tradition, design and craftsmanship to enable our customers to create an outdoor haven and enchanted space in their gardens".

Each tent is made by hand using an off white 15oz durable Rip-Stop canvas composed of a cross weaved polyester and cotton. Rip-Stop canvas is immensely sturdy. The interior lining of each tent is exquisitely hand-printed using distinctive hand-blocked prints from Sanganer, Rajasthan. In this ancient art, the cotton is printed by hand with carved wood-blocks which have been dipped in nontoxic dyes. We have developed several different sized tents to fit your requirements. If you need any help working out the best solution for your needs, please contact us.

Sustainable Materials

Tent Exteriors: The exteriors are made from marquee-white15oz durable Rip-Stop canvas composed of a cross weaved polyester and cotton. Rip-Stop canvas is immensely tough. It has a high strength/weight ratio which gives a longer life without the heavyweight. The canvas is treated to ensure that is both water-resistant to BS 3408:1992 standards, Rot-resistant to BS 207:1992 and Flame -resistant to BS 7837:1996, BS 5867 part 2 type B, CPAI 84:1995 Sec 6, NFPA 701

Tent Interior Linings: For the linings, we offer hand-printed cotton or woven fabric that is inherently fire-retardant complying with international standards.

Tent Frames: We make our tents with durable stainless-steel frames. The frames are versatile, freestanding structures, which can be installed on soft ground, concrete or even a wooden deck. Frame tents are easy to erect and transport as they have no interior centre poles. The side poles fix into substantial footplates, which can be bolted to a hard surface and with additional guy ropes provide support on softer ground. The stainless steel is 100% recyclable as it is not coated with any toxic material; it does not produce toxic run-off. The waste it produces is reusable, and our carefully selected manufacturers use clean processes, dispose of waste properly and reuse materials and scrap.

Hand-blocking on Interior Linings

Traditional hand block printing has been practised in India for around 500 years. The skills of block printing are passed down for generations within families and communities. We use AZO free pigment dyes.

We design print and manufacture our tent linings and drapes. Choose from our stock prints or request an exclusive custom made interior. Contact us with your ideas.

A print starts with a design, drawn on paper and carved into a Sheesham wood block. The cross-section of the wood must be free from any knots or imperfections. The wood is sanded for a smooth finish and then whitened with a chalk paste. The design is traced onto the surface, and then the artisan carves the wood, often taking days to finish a design.

Block printers take years to learn their skills. Each colour in the design is carved into a separate part of the block.

The printing is then stamped individually in rows on the fabric. The process takes skill and time, as the pattern must be stamped repeatedly across the fabric, colour by colour.

HAND –BLOCK PRINTS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE FOLLOWING DESIGNS AND COLOURS:

Indigo, Taupe, Sand, Ochre, Blue, Chocolate, Silver and Gold

Below are the motifs that you can pick to make your own pattern or design. Each motif can take two or three colours. The motifs can also have tiny mirrors inserted into the pattern secured with gold or silver embroidery. We can also develop exclusive prints, logos, applique motifs, embroidery, tiny mirror work with gold or silver stitching and tassels.

Practical Considerations

Proper use and care of your tent will ensure many years of tenting pleasure

The tents come complete with the appropriate canopies, sidewalls, metal poles, guy ropes, stakes, wooden pegs, and storage bags for the canvas. It may be necessary to purchase a mallet to put up the tents. All our tents take only a few hours to erect with two persons and similarly to dismantle. The sidewalls are attached to the canopy by hooks, and the panels are laced together.

Canvas: Robust canvas composed of a cross weaved polyester and cotton blend. Rip-Stop canvas is immensely sturdy. This polyester and cotton canvas has a high strength/weight ratio which gives a longer life without the heavyweight. The Rip-Stop weave gives a high tear strength resulting in excellent durability and resistance to damage. Please note, the canvas can shrink by up to 3% due to weathering. Please make allowances.

Canvas Care Guidelines

Pre-use Weathering: Before using a tent for the first time, the canvas will need to be pre-conditioned or 'weathered' for the structure to have a natural water repellence. Pre-soak with a garden hose or similar; avoid high-pressure washers as these may remove surface proofing. The fabric needs to thoroughly soak to allow the fibres to swell and relax/shrink back to tighten the weave on drying. This wetting/drying process will enable the canvas to condition and gain its full waterproofing properties and help close up the stitching holes. The process of weathering may take more than one attempt

Maintenance: Allow any mud or dirt to dry. Gently brush off with a soft, lint-free, fabric pad. The canvas should be cleaned with a damp sponge using pure cold water. No detergents or power washers should be used as this will remove the rot-resistant and waterproof finish. Keeping grass and weeds trimmed around the bottom of the tent is also essential since dampness clings to foliage and does not allow air to get to the fabric.

Storing: Fabrics should never be packed and stored damp. The material should be aired entirely dry before packing away. All-natural fibres are susceptible to mildew. For mildew to grow, it requires heat and moisture. Mould will result quickly on canvas if folded away wet or stored in a damp place. If the fabric is stored for any length of time, we recommend a dry, well-ventilated area.

Canvas care and cleaning: Gently brush off with a soft, lint-free, fabric pad. The fabric should be cleaned with a damp sponge using pure cold water. No detergents or power washers should be used as this will remove the rot-resistant and waterproof finish. Regular reproofing is recommended.

Shrinkage: All tents made from natural fibres, like cotton, will shrink slightly and this will affect the "finished size" measurements of the canvas. The exact amount of shrinkage is impossible to predict.

Winds: Our tents, if erected correctly, are designed to be very stable. However, intense winds can cause extensive damage to your tent and frames. Be sure to set your tent up using all the stakes and ropes provided. Even when using a freestanding frame, it will be necessary to also guy the tent out front and back using the grommets provided in the ends of the ridge if used in windy conditions. Frequently checking the stakes and tightening the guy ropes if they loosen during periods of high winds will keep things together. Leave the walls on any side likely to face strong winds (have the entrance on a different side). Never take all the sides off a marquee in strong winds. If the tent is left alone for periods in windy conditions, we advise that all the panels are attached. This makes it harder for the wind to blow underneath the tent with the risk of blowing it away.
